Help Secure COVID-19 Energy Assistance for Michigan Families

Congress is considering including additional funding for the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) as part of COVID-19 emergency funding. This program—and the state and local efforts it supports—provides an invaluable lifeline for low-income Michigan households. Unfortunately, funding has never fully met the need here in Michigan or nationwide.

The economic impact of the COVID-19 quarantine means even more individuals and families will struggle to pay for basic necessities in the months and years ahead. Congress should extend LIHEAP funding as part of our nation’s response to the current crisis. Access to reliable energy is always vitally important. In the context of the pandemic, it is more critical than ever.

Energy provides the means for families to stay connected to basic goods and services, as well as each other; for children to stay connected to education; and for people to access the information they need to navigate these challenging circumstances safely.

The federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides an invaluable lifeline for many Michigan homes. The economic impact of COVID-19 means more Michigan households need the energy assistance LIHEAP supports.

Tell your members of Congress to support vital energy assistance programs by including funding for LIHEAP in the next round of COVID-19 emergency funding.
