Giving the Gift of Energy

The holiday season should be a time for celebration and merriment. However, for many low-income Michigan households, it can be a time when budgets are strained as families struggle to pay for essentials like food, medicine, and utilities while also making the holidays merry and bright for their loved ones.

That’s why giving the gift of energy—and energy assistance—might be the perfect gift for someone in need this year.

Finding Help in the Heat and Warmth Fund

The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) is a non-profit organization that distributes energy assistance to vulnerable Michigan households through nearly 40 partners.

In 2019, THAW distributed more than $15 million in energy assistance to nearly 18,000 Michigan homes. In total, the organization has given out more than $190 million in assistance to more than 256,000 Michigan homes since its inception in 1985.

There are multiple ways you can donate to THAW—online, over the phone, or by mail. Visit their website for more information or to donate today.

Paying it Forward

Michigan’s local energy providers, Consumers and DTE, offer programs that allow people to help their fellow Michiganders in need. If someone you know is struggling to pay their energy bills this winter, you might consider using one of the following resources:
