Celebrating L(IH)EAP Year: 5 Ways to Support Energy Assistance in Michigan

Continuing with our focus on the critical issue of energy assistance in Michigan, the Alliance for Michigan Power invites you to join us in showing your support for LIHEAP.

LIHEAP Action Day is just two days away!  On March 2, advocates from Michigan and around the country will gather in our nation’s capital to call on Members of Congress to strengthen their support of LIHEAP by increasing funding for the much-needed program.

This LIHEAP Action Day will help bring attention to the need for providing sufficient energy assistance for Michigan seniors, children and other vulnerable households who struggle to afford heat during Michigan’s frigid winters.

Here are 5 simple but significant ways you can support energy assistance in Michigan:

1. Donate to the Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW)

As the leading provider of utility assistance in Michigan, this charity helps seniors, the disabled, and the unemployed with long-term energy assistance. You can donate $10 to the THAW Fund right now by simply texting THAW to 50555.

2. Give the Gift of Energy

Want to help someone you know with their energy bill? DTE Energy offers Gift of Energy, giving you a way to help a friend, family member, or anyone in need by paying a portion or all of their energy bill.  To give a gift, simply complete a Gift of Energy form and mail it with your check or money order. The recipient will receive a card notifying them of your gift.

3. Participate in People Care

This program offered by Consumers Energy allows you to make a donation to support energy assistance for low-income Michiganders. It’s as easy as checking a box on your October or April bill, making an online donation, or mailing a check.  Check out the PeopleCare online brochure for more information.

4. Spread the Word

Tell your family, friends, and co-workers about the opportunities to support energy assistance in Michigan. The more people know, the more likely they are to lend a hand to keep their friends and neighbors warm. Tell your friends and family about the Alliance for Michigan Power to learn more about LIHEAP and energy assistance.

5. Contact your Legislators on LIHEAP Action Day

Stay tuned to the Alliance for Michigan Power on Wednesday and we’ll provide you the resources you need to contact your federal legislators and urge them to support increased LIHEAP funding.

Thanks again for all you do to support fair, reliable energy for all Michiganders—together, we can ensure low-income Michigan families aren’t left out in the cold!
